Give useful context
Explain the task, your starting point, and the information the AI should use. Relevant background helps more than a long collection of unrelated details.
From my classroom to your next prompt
Better instructions give AI a clearer starting point. Learn five practical ways to turn a vague request into a response you can actually use, then decide for yourself whether it meets the goal.
Explore the five principlesFive principles. More intentional results.
Choose a principle to jump to its example. Read the starting prompt, reveal the improved version, and compare what changed.
About the examples: All sample outputs below are illustrative, written to explain the principles. They are not results from model tests. Actual responses will vary.
Before you press send
A strong prompt combines useful instructions with responsible judgment. Keep these habits close, especially when the output will become part of a real assignment or business decision.
Explain the task, your starting point, and the information the AI should use. Relevant background helps more than a long collection of unrelated details.
Say who will read or use the answer. An explanation for a college student needs a different level of detail than a briefing for a business manager.
Describe the voice you want, such as professional, approachable, and direct. Add a short example when a tone label alone leaves too much room for interpretation.
State limits such as word count, required sections, language, or file format. For structured workflows, validate the output: requesting JSON does not by itself guarantee valid JSON or accurate values.
Ask the AI to clarify missing details before drafting. Follow up with specific feedback about what to keep, change, or explain instead of simply asking it to “do better.”
Verify important claims, calculations, dates, and citations against reliable sources. Comparing models may reveal differences, but agreement between them is not proof that an answer is correct.
Remove names, account numbers, credentials, and confidential school or workplace data. Use anonymized or fictional examples and follow your organization’s rules before sharing information with an AI tool.
Check whether the response actually meets your goal, then revise it in your own voice. Follow course rules for AI use and disclose assistance when required.
Putting the learning to work
This course helped me see prompting as a skill I can keep improving through practice. In school, I can use it to organize projects and ask for explanations that support my learning; during internship searches, I can use it to compare opportunities and improve application drafts without inventing qualifications. For future business projects, I can break work into manageable steps, communicate clear requirements, and evaluate results before sharing them. My goal is to use AI thoughtfully while keeping my own judgment at the center of the process.
